
Why Your IR Lamps are Probably Messing Up Your Glass
Here is the thing about batch glass annealing: it’s picky. Like, really picky. If your kiln’s heat profile is off by just a few degrees, the whole batch is a gamble. You end up with internal stress, warped edges, and a lot of wasted material. I see this happen all the time. Usually, it’s because a shop is mixing and matching IR lamps from different production lots, thinking they’re all the same. They aren’t.
The Problem with “Nominal” Wattage
Most people look at a lamp, see “2000W” on the label, and assume that’s exactly what they’re getting. But in the real world, there’s a tolerance—usually ±5% or even 10%. That might sound small, but in a multi-zone kiln, it’s a disaster. When one lamp is pushing out more heat than the one next to it, you get these thermal gradients. It creates “striping” or uneven cooling across the glass. It’s frustrating because you’re doing everything right, but the hardware is lying to you. We fix this by tightening those tolerances. We match the lamps so the actual radiant output is nearly identical across every single tube. When you flip the switch, every zone hits the target temperature at the exact same time. No guessing.
Heat Density and the “Breathe” Factor
If you need rapid annealing, shortwave IR is the way to go. We use high-purity quartz envelopes because they stay clear and don’t bow when things get scorching. But there’s a catch. High power density puts a lot of stress on the ends of the lamp. If your mounting brackets are clamped down too tight, the quartz has nowhere to go when it expands.Snap. You need a floating mount. Your tubes need room to breathe, or you’re just waiting for them to crack.
Stop Chasing Ghosts
When your IR output is consistent, your PID tuning actually works. You can stop chasing those “ghost” temperature swings—those annoying dips and spikes that are actually just caused by mismatched lamps or old tubes wearing out. The heat flux stays steady from the first piece of glass to the last. It stops being a game of manual adjustments and starts feeling like a predictable, repeatable process. That’s when you can actually stop worrying about the kiln and focus on the work.
