
The Balancing Act: Keeping Your Glass Strong and Your Patterns Sharp
If you’ve spent any time with glass silk-screening, you know the struggle. It’s a total tug-of-war. You need enough heat to fuse the ink and get rid of those internal stresses, but the second you push it too far? Your patterns start to bleed, or worse, the glass warps. It’s a thin line to walk. That’s where shortwave infrared (IR) lamps come in. They’re basically the secret to keeping both sides happy.
Getting the heat right
The trick is to get the temperature up fast and keep it controlled. Shortwave IR is great because it doesn’t just sit on the surface—it dives deep, hitting the ink and the glass at the same time. This means the glass spends way less time in that “danger zone” where things start to deform. By tweaking your wattage and how you space the lamps, you can stop the ink from bubbling while still getting the glass hot enough to relieve that stress.
Don’t just crank the dial
When you’re dealing with thick glass slabs, it’s tempting to just blast the power. Don’t do that. If the heat hits too hard in one spot, you’ll end up with hot spots. And hot spots create new stresses, which defeats the whole purpose. A better way? Think in zones. Start with a lower intensity at the entrance to let the glass stabilize. Once it’s settled, hit it with the peak power in the middle of the tunnel. It’s a much smoother ride for the material.
Speed vs. Precision
Here’s the trade-off: if you want to move faster, your lamps have to run hotter. That puts a lot of wear and tear on your wiring and reflectors. Plus, your cooling fans have to actually be able to keep up with the heat building up inside the oven. If the housing gets too hot, your pattern clarity is going to take a hit. And a quick tip on precision: watch your distances. Even a few millimeters of shift between the lamp and the glass can swing your surface temperature by dozens of degrees. Keep those mounts tight. And if you’re swapping in replacement parts, make sure the voltage and wattage match your power supply exactly. Otherwise, you’re just asking to burn out your transformers.
