
The Tug-of-War Between Sharp Prints and Strong Glass
If you’ve spent any time in glass screen printing, you know the headache. You’re constantly fighting a battle between getting your ink to cure and getting the glass ready for the tempering furnace. It’s a delicate balance. If you crank the heat too high, your ink bleeds or burns, and your beautiful pattern looks like a mess. But if you go too light? The thermal shock in the furnace can snap the glass or leave you with stress imbalances that you’ll regret later. To stop this tug-of-war, we use infrared (IR) preheating right at the nip roller stage. It’s the bridge that keeps everything from falling apart.
Getting the Temperature Right
The trick is all in the ramp-up. We lean on shortwave IR lamps because they hit the surface fast. They don’t just soak the whole piece of glass in heat; they get in and out. By tucking these lamps around the nip rollers, the glass hits the tempering zone at a steady, predictable temperature. No more “cold spots.” And as anyone who’s had to scrap a batch knows, cold spots are exactly what lead to those annoying optical distortions or a piece of glass that just isn’t strong enough.
Keeping the Ink Crisp
Your prints only look as good as your solvent evaporation. That’s where the tuning comes in. You have to play with the wattage and the distance of those IR lamps to get a surface-level cure. You want the ink set—meaning it won’t smudge while it’s moving down the line—but you don’t want to bake it so hard that the colors shift. **Here’s a tip:**use zoned heating. It lets you tweak the heat at different points along the roller path. This is a lifesaver when you’re dealing with ink that varies in thickness.
The Catch (Because there’s always one)
High-intensity IR lamps are great for keeping the line moving fast, but they put off a ton of ambient heat. You can’t just plug them in and forget about them. If you don’t have a solid cooling system, your roller bearings and conveyor belts are going to take a hit. When those rollers overheat, they can actually warp. Once that happens, your pressure becomes uneven, and you’ll start seeing streaks in your prints. Keep your airflow tight. It’s the only way to keep the machinery happy while the glass gets hot.
