
Getting the Heat Right for Mobile Glass Repair
When you’re building a mobile glass repair rig, you’ve got a real headache: you need massive heat, but you have almost no room to put it. You can’t just slap a giant industrial heater onto a handheld bracket and call it a day. It wouldn’t fit, and it definitely wouldn’t be portable. The secret is using short wave infrared (SWIR) quartz lamps. Instead of just warming up the air, these things punch energy straight through the glass. It hits the resins and adhesives almost instantly. It’s fast. Really fast. And that’s what makes the repair actually work on the go. The battle with power and space Fitting that kind of power into a tiny bracket is a balancing act. We use high-purity quartz tubing so we can push the tungsten filament to crazy temperatures without the whole thing warping or melting. But here’s the tricky part: voltage drop. In a mobile setup, your power is limited. If your lamps aren’t perfectly matched to your inverter or power supply, you’re just wasting energy as heat in your wires. We keep the tubes short to concentrate the current. This creates a “hot spot” exactly where the glass meets the bracket, putting the heat right where you actually need it. Why quartz? We stick with quartz because it can take a beating. In mobile repair, you’re flipping the switch on and off all day. Standard glass would just crack under that kind of thermal shock. One thing to watch out for, though: all that concentrated heat doesn’t just go into the glass. It bleeds. If you put a high-wattage lamp in a cheap plastic or thin aluminum housing, you’re going to melt your mounts. You’ve got to use heat shields or some active cooling to keep your electronics from frying. Keeping it simple For the wiring, we don’t overcomplicate things. We use heavy-duty crimps and standard sockets. Why? Because mobile rigs vibrate. A lot. You don’t want a connection shaking loose in the middle of a job. Plus, it makes the lamps a simple drop-in replacement. When the filament eventually burns out, you just swap it and get back to work. You get all the punch of a traditional oven without any of the bulk.
