
Keeping Your Bathroom Infrared Heaters Safe and Dry
Putting an infrared heater in a bathroom is a great call, but let’s be honest: bathrooms are basically steam rooms. Between the humidity and the direct water vapor, you’re playing a risky game if your wiring isn’t bulletproof. You can’t just wing it with standard cables. You need total insulation, or you’re looking at leakage currents and short circuits. Nobody wants that.
The battle against moisture
Here’s the deal with the physics: we build these recessed units to keep the live heating element completely separate from the ceiling chassis. Moisture loves to find a path to travel across a surface. To stop that in its tracks, we use high-dielectric ceramic insulators at the lamp terminals. These things don’t soak up water. They keep the current exactly where it belongs—inside the quartz tube. And for heaven’s sake,make sure the housing is grounded. If a wire frays or a seal gives out, a grounded chassis is the only thing stopping the whole enclosure from becoming live.
Picking the right parts
The connectors you choose will either make your life easy or give you a nightmare. We stick with sealed terminal blocks. They stop steam from creeping into the wiring junctions. If you go cheap and use open-air connectors, the terminals will oxidize. Then you get arcing, and eventually, the whole thing just burns out. We also make sure the quartz lamps fit snugly in their reflectors. If there’s a gap, the lamp rattles. If it rattles, the glass can crack. Once that happens, moisture hits the filament, and it’s game over.
The trade-offs you need to know
Going with a fully recessed, insulated system is definitely the safest bet. But there’s a catch: that tight packaging traps a lot of heat around the wires. Because of that, you can’t use standard PVC wire. It’ll peel and melt over time. You need high-temperature silicone wiring—something rated for 180°C or higher. One last thing: check your IP rating. An IP44 rating is fine for a few splashes, but if you’ve got a heavy-steam shower, you need something tighter. Keep a close eye on the gasket quality, too. A leaky seal lets moisture sit right on the electrical parts, and it’ll eat through your insulation before you even notice it.
